RAFA Wings Egg Run 2009

Just a couple of bikes from the Run

Just a couple of bikes from the Run

We had another fantastic run last Sunday 5th April when we took part in the RAFA Wings Egg Run Appeal. Nigel, Joanna, Stevie CP, Janet and I attended at the RAFA Club, Wrexham where we met up with Dave, a Harley rider (until he sees the error of his ways). This was one of five meeting points around the UK for riders to register to participate in the Egg Run.

There were numerous other riders already there who were making the most of the refreshments available. This was followed by a safety briefing by Paul Cheshire, from Bikesafe. Engines roared to life and we then rode off in a loose group down the A483 and onto the A5 road. We maintained a nice pace but not silly speeds all the way to Shrewsbury Town Football

Stadium.

It was quite a sight to see a very large number of riders making good time without being silly, and I was glad to see that the ‘posers’ who do the silly stunts were not in attendance.

I have been on rides with very large numbers of riders but at a much slower pace – the Wirral Egg Run being an example, where the average speed is quite low and mopeds can keep up.

This run was maintaining a steady 60-65 mph on the dual carriageways and 50-55 on ordinary derestricted roads.

On arrival at Shrewsbury Prostar Stadium we were quickly marshalled into lines of parked bikes and more refreshments were available as well as the usual necessities. The riders from the other start points all turned up and we filled a very large part of the car park with most types of bikes and trikes.

Leaving the M53 to join the A41

At 11.30 sharp we were escorted by the police back onto the A5 and onto the M53 where we kept to a steady 65 mph all the way to the A41 turnoff where we were marshalled quickly and efficiently into a side road which led straight to RAF Cosford and the Aircraft Museum.

We were soon parked and walked over to the lorries where we handed over the booty of Easter Eggs to the RAF personnel who just as eagerly received them.

We were given free entry to the Aircraft Museum and following a bite of lunch on the grassy banks we went for a look around the new hall. I managed to get some good photos from within the hall.  Seeing the planes in the way they were displayed was marvellous.

EXTERMINATE EXTERMINATE

EXTERMINATE EXTERMINATE

Soon it was time to head back to the bikes and we started to make our way back.

At this time two daleks were wandering around threatening to exterminate everyone, so Jan went over to have her photo taken with them, but this seemed to make them angry and after several threats to exterminate her she was shocked when they actually shot her – with a spray of water.  It was very funny for the rest of us.

The return journey was at a nice steady pace and went without any hitches, in fact to the best of my knowledge the whole event was like that, just as it should be.

A truly enjoyable day
